Newsletter October 2, 2015 Dear Parents,Thank you again for all your support as we begin the school year. Students are getting into the routine of school with your help and support. Thank you for helping your child be successful. Please read, review and sign your child’s Weekly Behavior Report and return to school Monday.Mrs. Sander is pleased to announce the Campbell fifth graders have been invited to sing at the High School Orchestra Spootakular Concert on Wednesday, October 28. This is a Halloween themed concert, and will include a costume contest. Your child is encouraged to dress up for this event! The concert begins at 7:00 pm, but your child needs to be at the high school auditorium stage at 6:15 to rehearse with the orchestra. Mrs. Sander is in need of a few parent volunteers to supervise children between the rehearsal and performance. A sheet with more information and a volunteer sign up was sent home last week. If you need additional info, contact Mrs. Sander: [email protected]Please send in box tops! We are in competition with other classes to collect the most.
Math We continued studying equivalent fractions along with adding and subtracting mixed numbers. Students will have a test this coming week on fractions. The test will cover the same material you see your child working on for homework The memorization of math facts is very important and affects the success of many other concepts we will be learning this year (for example: division, fractions, and algebra). Many dollar stores sell flash cards, or sets are easily made with index cards.
Language Arts Our theme this week was Whales from the realistic fiction genre. We focused on summary. Students should be reading their book report books daily, both at home and school. Drafts are due this Tuesday October 6th (sheets were passed out last week). Friday students will bring home the beginning materials to start their report along with directions. In Mrs. Van Huesen grammar lesson is focusing on similes and metaphors . Social Studies (Mr. Lamphere) In Social Studies, we continued our discussion about the three branches of government. We focused in on the job duties of each branch and how checks and balances stops any one group from becoming too powerful. We played an interactive scavenger hunt to review these concepts.
Science Students took a quiz over on the scientific method this week. Ask your child to show you his/her results. We also started learning about potential and kinetic energy. Ask your child to tell you about the balloon demonstration. This coming week we will learn about Issac Newton and the 3 Laws of Motion.
